Encapsulation

When it comes to stained-glass, there really is no substitute that will achieve the same clarity and brilliance of the real thing, and for many of our customers, the very reason they haven’t replaced their windows – despite draughts, high heat loss and failing frames – is because they have beautiful, original stained-glass windows and don’t want to lose this attractive feature. At Classic Glass, we can retain the character of your property by encapsulating your original windows into double-glazed units, which can then be fitted into new or existing frames. Not only does this protect the stained-glass, but it also increases the energy efficiency and security of your windows.

To encapsulate an existing stained or leaded glass window, the glass is removed from the window frame of the property and temporary glazing is installed while the work is carried out. All necessary remedial work is then carried out to make the panel structurally sound. This may include replacing or repairing broken pieces of glass, re-leading and/or soldering any broken joints. Then, and if required, the panels are resized to fit the unit – the utmost consideration is given to retaining the integrity of the original design – and a new profiled edge lead is fitted ready for encapsulation. Finally, the panel is thoroughly cleaned, and the leads are polished/blackened before being encased in the unit and fitted into the frame.

“I am really pleased with the encapsulation of my 1930s stained glass windows in my house in Chapel-en-le-Frith. They look even better than the original as leading and glass is now clean. Before having them done I had a quote from a larger well-known company who said they could only copy the stained glass and it would cost more than I paid Classic Glass. Steve and Rob were both very reliable, efficient, and pleasant and I am happy to highly recommend Classic Glass of Dove Holes.”
